Ghost MV1 portable vaporizer review

Ghost MV1: Best of both worlds?

A decent on-demand vaporizer not only needs a large and powerful battery but also an efficient heatsink. These design requirements can easily be met in a sizable desktop vaporizer but cramming these features into an ergonomic, hand-held device is a whole new ballgame. The people behind Ghost set out to achieve the impossible: creating a powerful, on-demand convection vaporizer you can easily carry with you, suitable for herbs and concentrates alike. All the benefits of a desktop vaporizer combined with the on-the-go appeal of a portable vape: how did they fare?

Ghost MV1 performance: the gold standard for on-demand vaping

Ingenious design

The on-demand vaping performance of the MV1 is impressive, to say the least. In vape mode you can activate the battery pack by pressing a discreet vape button near the mouthpiece. The airflow in the Ghost MV1 is directed along a  airpath and is preheated through conduction heating before entering the oven. From then on, the vaporizer is in full convection mode as an efficient heating coil takes over. The hot air is drawn through the crucible, into a heat sink and through a retractable glass mouthpiece.

Preserves your herbs

The device’s fast heating and cooling time leave your herbs fresh after each draw. Overall, these features lead to a drastic increase in the absorption efficiency of your herbs’ active compounds. The Ghost MV1 will allow you to use roughly half of the material you would normally use in a conduction vaporizer.

Powerhouse

The removable, custom designed battery-pack will be able to supply you with enough power for about 50 draws, on a medium heat setting. The batteries will take about 8 hours to recharge using a regular USB-charger so you’ll need to plan ahead. If you like to improvise you can buy a fast charger which will charge your battery pack in a mere two hours.

Cloud 9

Even though the air has a long way to travel in the Ghost MV1, the draw resistance is nearly non-existent and can still be adjusted by retracting or extending the glass mouthpiece. The excellent build quality and choice of materials result in a flavorful, smooth and cool vapour, even at higher temperature settings.

Ghost MV1 Build Quality - Shiny and sturdy

The build quality of the Ghost MV1 is simply jaw dropping: it has a solid alloy body, feels heavy but somehow fits snugly in your hand and the parts feel and look like they’ve been machine tooled with impressive accuracy. No cheap, plasticky feel here…The vape comes in shiny and classy colours (satin silver, black chrome and nickel) and in a more modern stealth black.  The good people of Ghost were sure to use medical grade materials in sensitive areas along the airpath: the heatsink, mouthpiece and silicone parts exposed to the hot air.

Ghost MV1 User Friendliness - Pay attention, this will be on the exam

One button control

This device comes with a learning curve, there’s no doubt about it. You’ll have just one button to turn it on/off, and to configure temperature settings, battery level and vape mode. Your first draw in any of the temperature settings should be taken slowly and continuously until you receive haptic feedback. Luckily for people with a run-of-the-mill lung capacity, you are allowed to feel your way through subsequent draws.

Hands-on vaping

Loading and putting the crucible in place can be a bit tricky and requires some dexterity but on the plus side, there’s absolutely no need to stir your herbs mid-session. The Ghost MV1 is compatible with concentrates through the use of concentrate pads and even has a separate concentrate temperature setting. The vaporizer also has 3 fixed temperature settings for herbs and two custom temperature settings which you can program via an app.

Ghost MV1 -  Maintenance and essential accessories

Maintenance

Maintenance is fairly easy: disassemble the vape and bathe parts that collect residue in isopropyl alcohol for a while. A two year warranty should convince most of us of the Ghost MV1’s longevity.

Extra battery, fast-charger and crucible dispenser

You’ll want to get an extra battery pack and/or a fast charger, though, unless you’re really good at planning ahead. In any case, you wouldn’t want a vape session with friends to end prematurely. For those inevitable all-nighters, you can buy a crucible dispenser that comes with 5 crucibles you can load in advance. You can find all of the Ghost MV1 accessories here.

GHOST MV1 - Who should buy this?

Lovers of the finer things in life

The Ghost MV1 is a portable vape but not really suitable for a night out at the club. It’s far from being a ninja-vape and you sure as heck don’t want to drop this baby either. Instead, picture yourself slowly moving about your house, preparing a snack, taking in the sunset from your windowsill and having a puff whenever you feel like it. This vaporizer also lends itself really well for a cosy night in with your friends given that your herbs won’t deteriorate while you’re passing the Ghost MV1 on the left hand side. Experienced users who appreciate high quality, cool vapour and are willing to invest time in learning how to use the device properly should drop everything and buy a Ghost MV1 right this minute.

Good value for money

Integrating an on-demand, convection heating system with a portable design is no easy feat so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Ghost MV1 comes at a hefty price. The vaporizer MV1 can be found in the same price range as other high-end vaporizers.

Ghost MV1 - Pros and Cons

Pros

- Convection heating preserves your herbs
- Exceptionally flavorful, smooth and cool vapour
- Impressive build quality and medical grade materials where it counts
- Excellent value for your money

Cons

- Controls take some getting used to
- Loading can be a bit of a hassle
- Portable vaporizer but not build for on-the-road use
- Battery takes a while to charge without the fast-charger

Ghost MV1 - The final verdict

In terms of performance, the portable Ghost MV1 rivals a high-end desktop vaporizer. This on-demand vaporizer doesn’t come cheap but its quality convection heating system will definitely get the most out of your herbs. The Ghost MV1 produces a flavorful, smooth and surprisingly cool vapour for such a compact device. It takes some time getting used to the minimalist controls but once you get the hang of it, you’ll probably want to declare this your go-to vaporizer. Dip into your savings, take your time to get acquainted, and go for the state-of-the-art in portable vaping.

How to use your Dynavap - cleaning and care

To use your VapCap:

1. Most Important! Before your first use, please read all of these instructions and then do at least two, preferably more than two, dry runs with nothing in the VapCap! This is very important to become familiar with the operation of the unit and prevent unintentional combustion residues.
2. The VapCap is unlike any other vaporizer, so give it a few tries empty to get the feel of its unique temperature-indicating click. Heat the VapCap in a quiet area, listen and feel so you know what you are looking for. If you are using a torch lighter, this should not take more than 5 or 6 seconds. Heat the middle of the cap not the end and rotate while heating. If more than 6 seconds go by and you don’t hear the click, stop heating and let it cool down.
3. If you severely overheat your VapCap it can be permanently damaged. It is very important you hear the cool down click, or allow it to cool to the touch, before heating for the next cycle. Repeat this procedure several times to get the feel of how this little unit operates.
4. When you are ready for the first use, let it cool down, then remove the cap from the VapCap.
5. Fill the VapCap chamber with your material of choice. This can be done easily by pushing the VapCap into a container of your material and twisting. Pre-grinding your material is NOT needed like when using a bat or hitter. If you prefer to grind, go coarse. Finely ground material will get through the diffuser disc and into the unit.
6. Place the cap back on the VapCap.
7. Heat up the metal cap of your VapCap while rotating it, with the flame or heat source applied to the last third of the metal cap. Try to only apply heat to the side of the cap and NOT the end. This is not like lighting a smoking device.
8. Continue rotating and heating the cap until you hear and or feel a click - this means the VapCap is ready!
9. Puff on the mouthpiece. Experiment a little here. If you draw with the air hole completely plugged the flow will seem somewhat restricted. This is normal. Some find they get the best result by taking a long, slow steady draw with the hole completely open, and others will intermittently or lightly cover the air/vapor mix port. The way air flows through the VapCap cools the vapor to provide a smooth experience.
10. Keep drawing as desired until you hear the click again, this means the VapCap has cooled down.
11. When the vapor production diminishes, it is easy to reactivate. a. Make sure the VapCap has re-clicked “to cool” before reheating for the next cycle. b. If you are not sure if it has re-clicked, gently blow on the end to cool it. It may take up to 1 minute to reset.
12. When there is no longer any desirable vapor produced, and the cap has clicked “to cool”, remove the cap. The consumed material can be either blown out the end, or the little tang on the cap is also a wonderful “digger outer.”
13. Reload for another round of simple and wonderful vapor.

Tips:

1. It is recommended that you use a butane torch style lighter with your VapCap.
2. Wait until you hear or feel the reset click or at least 30 seconds after the VapCap stops producing vapor to reheat.
3. It is VERY important to wait until you hear the cool down click before applying more heat.
4. Stop heating your VapCap as soon as you hear the click until you get to know each other better.
5. You can vary the intensity of the flavor by using the air/vapor adjustment port.
6. Depending on your personal preference and heat source, as well as how many cycles since the VapCap was loaded, you may want to apply heat for 1-2 seconds after the click. This will provide for a different level of roasted flavor.
7. DO NOT APPLY HEAT FOR MORE THAN 3 SECONDS PAST THE CLICK! OVERHEATING WILL PERMANENTLY DAMAGE THE VAPCAP!
8. The end of the VapCap gets very hot during and following use. Do not touch the hot end until it has cooled. Also please do not put the hot end into your mouth.
9. The VapCap can be safely put back in its Special Case or reloaded after the cool down click is heard.
10. We have done our best to remove the hassle from using a vaporizer. The VapCap doesn’t have any fancy digital display or lights, but it does make great vapor.

Cleaning instructions:

To remove consumed material from the chamber, either blow on the mouthpiece or use the built in extractor or “digger outer” to empty the chamber. The body can be cleaned with hot water. You can also use the included carrying case with almost any cleaning solution filled half full then shake or soak to wash your VapCap with the cap removed.

WARNING: Cleaning with alcohol or other flammable liquids is not recommended. Alcohol will not damage any component of the VapCap, even with prolonged soaking, but we do not recommend using it.

Organic Bill travels to Amsterdam to experience his first “Vape Night”

Going freelance one has only one disadvantage in my mind - Christmas parties. There ain’t none. Just like you need to find your own work you need to find your own work-do to gate crash.

This year there was no need to crash a party as VapoShop have been running a weekly vape night in the stylish Coffeeshop Amsterdam Café on Singel canal just a few minutes walk from Central station. Note the “café” in the name - this is not a coffeeshop. Which is nice - as you don’t have to trip over semi-dissolved dysfunctional UK tourists to get to a dysfunctional toilet. This place is the perfect combination of classy and cosy.

Vape Night has been running now for quite a few weeks and after seeing all the glowing reviews I figured it was worth the 3-hour drive to get to Amsterdam.

I was staying on the North side of the Noordzeekanaal - the North Sea Canal (don’t be intimidated by long Dutch words; they are just sentences without any spaces). It turned out to be a 15-minute ferry crossing from a surreal cityscape complete with its own discarded street-art-clad submarine and other oddities. “NDSM Werf” the place was called - which sounds like a spaceport. The spotting of “Blast Galaxy” - a retro arcade club - confirmed to me it was actually a spaceport.

I arrived at Central Station early to catch up with vape aficionado Cannamelier who is one of the organisers of Vape Night. Actually, in my mind, I was early, but for poor Cannamelier I was pushing him to be late - he had a lot of glass to polish before the event kicked off.

We slurped down noodles at Wagamama’s in Central Station - which has been transformed over the years from a crack den to a sleek waterside shopping centre. It’s nice to not have to dodge the muggers, prostitutes, pickpockets and dealers that used to harass tourists in the past around these parts.

I was not here to admire the gentrification of the city but here for an interesting development in the Amsterdam nightlife scene - “Vape Night”. Heading away from Central Station things liven up a bit. If you head to the west (your right side, if your back is to the station) you come to the trendy Haarlemmerstraat. Just before Haarlemmerstraat, you cross the Singel canal. Situated right on Singel was our destination - Coffeeshop Amsterdam Café.

In case you find the name a little confusing, I’ll explain. Coffeeshop Amsterdam Café is owned by Coffeeshop Amsterdam but it is not a coffeeshop, it’s a café. The clue is in the name - obvious once pointed out but the penny didn’t drop for the many disappointed looking groups of young guys being politely turned away and pointed in another direction. Here, we were in a civilised place - where the toilets functioned and you could enjoy a nice glass of chardonnay if you fancied it.

Cannamelier set to work cleaning up the selection of crème de la crème desktop herbal vaporisers. A process which involves medical grade pure alcohol. Anything that required water - to cool the clouds of vapour - was filled with distilled water. It’s this attention to detail that makes this event such a success. I’ve met some vape geeks in my time but Cannamelier is the ultimate - he’s the guy the vape geeks turn to when they need advice.

If you come along to Vape Night you will definitely learn something - no matter your level of experience. I learnt one very important lesson - whenever I visit Amsterdam in the future I’m to make sure it falls on a Thursday.

Once the thousands of euros worth of vapes - from Storz and Bickel, de Verdamper (my personal favourite vape of all time), VapeXhale and Herborizer - were lined up on display, all that was needed was a human shield to avoid the space around the table becoming too crowded. That’s where I came in. I was plonked on a table to the side to help keep folks at bay and ensure nothing accidentally toppled over. Sitting still for a few hours is a task I’m particularly suited to, in fact I’ve trained for such eventualities for the best part of my adult life.

I was not alone for long. A few vape enthusiast Instagrammers turned up to join me. I probably looked like their dad sat there in the middle. After introductions, we all figured out that we were all following each other and interacting already in the virtual world, it was great to get to meet these guys in the flesh @sundancekid.sdk, @runa.vape, @pauljamesnl and “Stan da man” @gapie17. Not forgetting of course @cannamelier. Judging by my Instagram feed from the last few weeks there’s always been someone there whom I’m connected too. It offers the perfect opportunity to socialise with like-minded souls.

Vape Night is not just targeted at “vape nerds” it’s also the ideal opportunity for anyone who is on the fence about the purchase of a vape to try before they buy. After all, these things cost a fair chunk of money.

A common question people ask before their first purchase is - “what is the best vape?” The answer is; there is no best vape, just the best vape for your needs. Having the opportunity to chat with a vape expert such as Cannamelier gives people the ideal way to discover and experience the best vape that is waiting for them.

A prime example was a young guy from the UK who was actually attending the event with his mum. They gingerly approached the table and asked many questions about the models on display. Cannamelier prepared some freshly ground herbs and they were not only able to sample the contraptions but get sound advice on the best way to use them. This experience is only possible offline at an event such as this. As a parting gift they each received a DynaVap VapCap M. Sometimes it pays to be curious.

By 21:30 this old man was ready to hit the hay. I set off on my chilled out free “cruise” over the expanse of water to space port NDSM after enjoying what could well have been the best “work do” ever.

Vape Night is presented by Coffeeshop Amsterdam Café and VapoShop every Thursday evening from 19:00-21:30 at the café which is situated on Singel 8.

Vaping vs. smoking

Add this one to your list for 2019: smoke less, vape more

The start of the new year seems to be as good a time as any to reexamine old, ingrained habits and see if there are better, healthier or more efficient ways to enjoy life's pleasures. When evaluating the ways you administer medicinal herbs, you may want to delve a little deeper into the specifics before making any rash decisions. In this article, we will answer the question that’s probably been in the back of your mind for some time: does it make sense to cut back on smoking your herbs and start vaping them instead?

Even though many medicinal substances are traditionally ingested orally, bypassing the digestive tract is in many cases a good idea. Any substances you swallow will be broken down by your liver as it travels through your body with only a fraction of the active components actually reaching the bloodstream. Smoking or vaping a substance allows it to sidestep this journey, making sure the majority of the active components reach your brain quickly and efficiently.

So, should you be smoking or vaping your medicinal herbs?

The main problem with smoking any substance, whether it’s man-made or coming from nature’s bounty, is that you inhale harmful byproducts that are the inevitable result of combustion. Vaping involves heating a substance without actually allowing it to combust, which is why vaping medicinal herbs is more healthy than smoking them. Also, the vapour produced by vaporizers is less hot and irritating which makes vaping easier on the lungs in the long run. Another interesting feature of vaporizers is that they also allow you to use liquid concentrates instead of herbs, which further reduces the intake of any lingering toxins.

Vaping herbs also significantly reduces the risk of destroying the active components of medicinal substances. Smoking a medicinal herb is highly inefficient because most of the herb literally goes up in smoke. Conversely, vaporizers produce just enough heat to extract the active components and to efficiently deliver them in gaseous form. It should come as no surprise then that vaping a medicinal herb will also save you a decent amount of money in the long run. Besides this, most vaporizers will allow you to set the exact temperature when vaping a herb, allowing you to regulate which active components are extracted and which ones remain solid.

Aside from health benefits, a boost in efficiency and the ability to customize the intake of active components, vapour from vaporizers generally smells and tastes just a whole lot better than smoke. Indoor vaping therefore becomes a real possibility as the vapour will not stick to your drapes or cushions and will have a similar staying power as the scent from an aroma diffuser.

Smoking or vaping - make up your mind!

Considering the multiple benefits of vaping, should you feel compelled to abandon your old habits entirely? Not really, nobody likes to be in an either/or situation and you should definitely smoke your medicinal herbs from time to time when you feel like it. Sometimes you are just not in the mood to set up your vaporizer or to tinker with temperature settings. Besides, the tactile sensation of preparing a herb to be smoked could be considered therapeutic as well. Generally speaking though, the arguments for switching to vaporizers are rock-solid and given the level of quality and reliability of vaporizers on the market right now, there is little reason for not giving them a try.

Which vaporizer is right for you?

VapoShop carries a number of vaporizer brands that will make the transition from smoking to vaping as smooth as humanly possible. TopBond stays ahead of the curve when it comes to quality and longevity and their vaporizers won’t break the bank either. The portable concentrate vaporizers supplied by Linx are as reliable as they are discreet. Some high-end on-demand vaporizers, such as the Ghost MV1, deliver vapour at a set temperature in the blink of an eye so you can switch between temperatures to your heart’s content. Other leading brands, such as DaVinci, offer a whole range of interesting accessories such as water cooling adapters for their portable vaporizers allowing for an even cooler vapour. DynaVap has developed a number of sleek, non-electric vaporizers with an ingenious mechanism that keeps your herbs from combusting. Browse our extensive range of quality vaporizers at VapoShop and don’t hesitate to ask us any questions you might have on finding a vaporizer that’s just right for you.

How to do a vaporizer burn-off?

Many of us have been there. You order a new vaporizer and simply can't wait to try out your new device when your vapemail arrives. You read the manual (as you always should), put your ground herb in the chamber and wait for the vaporizer to heat up. Excitedly, you take your first draw – only to find out that your vapour tastes a bit strange- not at all the way you expected it to taste.

This can be disappointing. However, we’re happy to tell you that even if you notice a funny taste there’s nothing wrong with your vaporizer and that the problem can easily be solved by doing a simple burn-off.

In this article, you can read all about why you should do this and how it’s done. You got this!

What is a burn-off (and why should I do it)?

With a burn-off you let your device run two cycles, heated on maximum without drawing from it. This way, you burn chemical residue or dust without inhaling it. A burn-off is just good practice as it serves both your vaporizer and your own health.

Just like any other electronic device, your new vaporizer was manufactured in a factory and has been in contact with different types of machinery. This can cause tiny amounts of oil or dust particles to get into contact with your device – and thus with the heating chamber. Every finished machine-made product is cleaned with a chemical solution, of which some residue can remain. This can leave a strange taste in your vaporizer.

Especially oven-based vaporizers can have a bit of an ‘off’ taste and could do with a burn-off.

What is an oven-based vaporizer?

How to do a burn-off (in 5 easy steps)

We recommend using ginger to do a burn-off, although using dried peppermint or sage would work as well. Using chamomile or lavender will leave a new taste that remains in the chamber for a while and is not recommended.

1. Charge your vaporizer fully.

2. Turn on your vaporizer to maximum temperature and allow it to run one cycle. If you have a device without an auto shutoff function, just let it run for five minutes.

3. Add ginger, peppermint or sage to the chamber.

4. Burn-off for another cycle.

5. Empty the ginger from the device and clean the chamber.

6. Run one more cycle at the highest temperature.

Voila! Burn-off complete. You vaporizer is now clean and ready to be fully enjoyed.

On-demand or Session vaporizers: What is best for you?

The number of available vaporizers on the market is ever- increasing. New criteria, new features, new categories. In this article we want gain a good grasp on a new distinction which defines the inhalation technique. We will look at the difference between on-demand vaporizing and session vaporizing.

It is our humble opinion that this is one of the main aspects to consider in the choice of a first time vaporizer purchase. Of course ideally one could have both an on-demand and session vaporizer, however this kind of expense is not for everyone's pocket. So let's look at the different usage styles to help you narrow down which model better suits you.

The main difference between these two techniques of consuming your dry herb, lies in the efficiency and the speed of the inhalation. This aspect determines whether you tend to enjoy full intense hits or rather a slow, continuous use over the course of a longer period of time.

Session vaporizing

In general terms it is logical to associate session vaporizing with conduction heating (occasionally with hybrid vaporizers).  This inhalation technique is characterized by a permanent heat emission until the herb is spent, thus the botanical material needs to be used all at once. A session cannot be interrupted half way, as the heating element takes some time to arrive to the configured temperature and then to cool down. By not continuing the inhalation cycle, one loses all the properties in the heating chamber, which continues to heat.

The dense, deep and continuous inhalation is usually compared to smoking a herbal cigarette. This similarity to smoking also associates this device to a more social, sharing session. However, these powerful hits are also attractive for medical users, who might need a substantial instant dose.

We take a quick look at the most popular and best-reviewed session vaporizers:

PAX 3:

The PAX 3 is a small, refined premium vaporizer that's interesting for all users, from first time vape owners to expert users. The discretion of this device is outstanding, proven by many well designed features that make its look elegant yet essential. Just to name a few, its haptic feedback feature, the lip sensor and the total control of the device through an app make this session vaporizer a top-end all-time favourite.

DaVinci IQ:

A well elaborated high-scale vaporizer with customisable options and interesting innovations. This device is know for the incredible flavour of its vapor, which thanks to a zirconia pearl remains evenly distributed and fresh. The DaVinci IQ is configured through an app, allowing for simple use or an elaborate and expert experience through a “Smart path technology” temperature setting.

Crafty:

A legendary device that just got a new update, making it more powerful and with a higher capacity. Crafty comes from a long line of first class Storz & Bickel vaporizers, which have created the perfect blend of devices both apt for recreational and medical use. Thanks to the unparalleled production quality, excellent inhalation efficiency, its hybrid heating chamber and its advanced cooling system, this vaporizer will please anyone looking for a full, flavourful cloud production.

Order the Crafty

On-demand vaporizers

On-demand vaporizers are convection vaporizers, but not all convection heating equals to on-demand vaporizing. On-demand vaporizing is a more refined and controlled way of managing your session. Although, it should be mentioned that the inhalation technique of most on-demand vaporizers present a learning curve. The most interesting feature of these devices is that the herbs in the chamber do not continue to heat up in between hits. This means that there is no need to use all your herb at once, one bowl can be used throughout an extended period, even the whole day.

The chamber, comparatively smaller to session vapes, heats up and cools down very quickly, in the higher-end models, this occurs in under 10 seconds. This controlled heat is ideal for those who like to microdose their herb throughout the day, with small and continuous hits.

On-demand vaporizers are sophisticated and thus can be in the higher price range. However this could be compensated by the fact that all botanical material will be used in the most efficient and essential way, and all its properties will be released when you demand it. This results in no waste of your herbs.

Let's take a look at the most interesting and popular on-demand vaporizers on the market.

Ghost MV1:

This is the model that has popularized and validated the on-demand hype, a true darling of the vape connoisseur. With a unique designed battery and a power distribution system, the Ghost MV1 aimes for a maximum power to evenly vape the material in the crucible. Thus its production of delicious and dense vapour will keep coming when and where you choose. This portable beast, which can handle both concentrates and dry herbs does present a learning curve, but the precision of its operation is matched by some of the most outstanding aromatic vapour produced by any portable vape.

Order the Ghost MV1

Firefly:

The first popular high-end portable vaporizer, offering instant on-demand vapour. The Firefly is considered the Apple of vaporizers, for its minimalist design, its intuitive functions, sleek shape and advanced app. The aroma of its vapor is unrivaled, but it will take a few sessions before the inhalation technique is perfected.

Sticky Brick Junior:

This fully analog, flame-powered vaporizer is not only beautiful to look at and precious to hold, thank to its solid wood body and glass tubes, but it is ingeniously engineered. In fact the herb will be heated only with hot air generated from the application of a torch flame and exclusively during inhalation. The Sticky Brick Junior is not only pretty and well built, and it offers some of the most aromatic and pure clouds of vapour yet seen.

So that is our take on session and on-demand vaporizing. Two different styles, for different needs and uses. We hope to have helped you better make more informed choices, there is no absolute best vaporizer, there is just the best one for you, and we are here to help you find it.

Debunking the convection vaporizer myth

Most of you may have heard of convection vaporizers and the benefits of using them. Maybe you even own one, or are thinking about buying one. Although convection is touted as the vaporizing method of choice among vaporizing aficionados, there are a few things to bear in mind. Beginning with: most vaporizers that are claimed to be full convection vaporizers are not full convection vapes.

In this article, we will first explain the difference between convection and conduction vaporizing. After that, we will debunk the convection myth once and for all.

What is a conduction (oven based) vaporizer?

Most vaporizers on the market are, in fact, oven based. In this type of vaporizer, your herbs are heated through direct contact with the hot material of the heating chamber ("oven"). This direct heating method typically gives full, dense draws. Conduction vaporizers are relatively easy to design and produce, and therefore, they're often cheaper than full convection vapes.

Because the plant material is heated through direct contact with a hot surface, you will have to stir during your session. Heating it for too long might also run the risk of "burning" your herbs. They won't catch fire, but the hit will be harsh on your throat and won't taste very nice.

What is a convection vaporizer?

Convection heating works differently. A convection vape technically shouldn’t vaporize material, until hot air has been drawn over it, extracting the active components. The heating element in these devices is separated from the herbs, so the hot air that it produces seeps through the flower or the oil in a slower, gentler way. This avoids combustion and exalts the aromas of the herb.

A convection vape often takes longer to heat up than an oven based one. It also requires a slightly different inhalation technique. To get the best results, it is recommended to take longer, slower draws - you'll be rewarded with smooth, light and delicious clouds of vapour.

The full-convection myth

Although sometimes marketed as such, most vaporizers are not full convection vapes. There are two main reasons for this:

  1. Conduction vaporizers are easier to produce. Conduction vapes don't have to be as technologically advanced as their convection counterparts. After all, it’s basically just an oven. The oven gets hot, and when the surface reaches vaporizing temperature, it 'bakes' your herbs. Even if your device also uses convection heating; as soon as your plant material is heated through contact with a hot surface, it becomes conduction (or oven based) vaporisation.
  2. Convection costs a lot of power. When you draw, the air that draws through your herbs cools down. So a convection vaporizer has to fight against the air cooling down too much, which costs extra power and is quite stressful on the battery and the heating system. Taking the calculations relating to distance, heat and draw speed into account, a 100% convection vaporizer is a technologically advanced, often quite expensive device.

Many oven-based vaporizers are claimed to be convection vaporizers. Which is not entirely incorrect; many vaporizers use convection heating, by heating up the air that passes through the herbs. However, in most of these vaporizers, the chamber heats up as well, making part of the extraction happen through conduction.

The only factor that defines if you're dealing with a conduction or convection vape, is if the plant material is in contact with a heated surface to create sublimation. If so, it is not convection.

The Ghost MV1 vaporizer: a few tips and tricks to master its use

One of the latest and most talked about portable vaporizers to hit the market is the Ghost MV1. This is the first device released by the manufacturer Ghost, and with its outstanding design, innovative technology and fantastically futuristic look, this vape is here to create waves in the vaporizing experience as we know it.

However, the full beauty and benefits of this device are only really revealed after an operational learning curve is mastered. We are here to help you get the most out of your Ghost MV1 experience. These tips and tricks will help the new user build on the basic functions learned through the instruction manual.

There are different factors that influence a draw taken from the Ghost MV1 portable vaporizer: the dryness of the material, the selected temperature, type of material, coarseness of grind, draw speed and height of the stem. One of the most rewarding experiences in vaporizing is to actually get to know your device and how to combine and fine-tune all the elements that influence it.

Material

In any vaporizer, it is essential that you use dry material to vaporize. However, in the Ghost, it is even more the case. Any dampness in the botanical material will negatively affect the performance. The best way to make sure that the material is dry, is to grind it and then lay it out on a piece of paper, for about half an hour. This should ensure optimal dryness.

The dry herbs should be coarsely ground. A too fine grind could see some particles slip through the holes of the filter and enter into the air path of the vaporizer. As with most other vaporizers, the herb chamber, which in this case is a removable crucible, should be filled to the brim but not packed too tightly.  After filling the crucible it is recommended to slightly tamp down on the herb, making sure there is none spilling out. The perfect density of herb is also a result of some experience and experiments.

Temperature

Another fundamental aspect of great influence on the performance is the temperature settings. For the best experience, it is best to start on the lowest temperature setting. This gets the first warm air through the herbs and starts the vaporization of the compounds with the lowest temperature extraction. By taking one or two draws at the lowest temperature, then two or three at the third setting and again finish it at the fourth or fifth temperature, you will achieve the best session. All the compounds will have been activated at the appropriate temperature, the fullest range of aroma will have been released, and dense and copious clouds of vapour will have been produced.

All of these aspects, the extraction, the aroma and the vapour volume, are in the Ghost MV1 of the highest quality. However, we do want to keep pointing out that to achieve such a high level of performance it is necessary to get to know your device.

In regards to the heat produced by the vaporizer, please be aware that the crucible does get really hot. In fact, it is not possible to touch it just after a session. It is a convection heating system and despite the materials’ low conductivity, the crucible and the lid still get very hot and need or cool down before being swapped or removed.

After a session the manufacturer recommends to open the lid and to blow on the crucible, or to draw through the stem without pressing the button, to allow some cold air to pass through the air path, cooling it down.

A few more tips and tricks for your Ghost MV1

Ghost MV1 Battery

Upon receiving the Ghost MV1 a full overnight charge is necessary in order to be able to use the device. Another solution to this would be to purchase a fast charger. However, if this is not available, plug it in before first use and wait until the next day for the light to go off before use. Not performing this correctly can “damage” or “wrongly program” the battery and give a false full.

Ghost MV1 and Concentrates

The Ghost performs very efficiently with concentrates, make sure the Ghost is in concentrates mode and add your extract to the pad before placing in the crucible.

A few last notes

The Ghost MV1 is not a classical “portable vaporizer”. It is slightly more bulky than average, requires space and time to load and the power needed to operate it makes it more suitable as a home portable. In other words, not the portable vaporizer you would take to a club or a festival.

The Ghost MV1 has its own operating system that somewhat sets it apart from many normal vaping practices. It is important to know and understand it before using it. However, once this learning curve is achieved, the purity and power of the session are unrivalled compared to most other portable vaporizers.
