There are many different types of vaporizers, but what they all have in common is that they heat herbs in a way that doesn't produce smoke. The resultant vapor only contains the active components of the herb itself and none of the harmful substances that make smoking such a health hazard. The vapor tastes better and doesn't irritate the throat and lungs.

Aromatherapy

Although the vaporizers on this website are all modern inventions, the practice of extracting and then inhaling therapeutically useful compounds from plants and trees by using heat is a very ancient practice. In Persia, Egypt, Rome and Greece physicians learned to use the volatile oils of flowers and aromatic herbs for the promotion of healing and well-being. Lavender oil, for example, calms the nerves, improves sleep, and was used to disinfect sick rooms. Other herbs that have been popular throughout the ages are eucalyptus, patchouli, peppermint, rosewood, rosemary, ylang-ylang and myrrh. Many fragrances were also used in religious rites.

Evaporating the essential oils of these herbs in a potpourri or aromalamp is quite similar to what occurs in a modern vaporizer, whereas the burning of herbs as incense is more akin to smoking, and thus less healthy. Instead of using an aromalamp or hot stones, as the ancient Egyptians used to do, it's also possible to first extract the etheric oils through distillation. Early types of distillation were known to the Babylonians in Mesopotamia from at least 2000 BC.

Nowadays there are hundreds of etheric or essential oils available. These can be evaporated in some of our vaporizers. Vaposhop has made a selection of the most widely used oils, as well as some fragrant herbs.
